We are looking for an intern Web Designer who is proficient and willing to learn. He/she will help with the creation of our learning platform and its marketing programme which is targeted to students, universities and industry.
This is a 20 hours internship extendable to a target of 85 hours online for the right candidate. You can work on the internship from home in 2 to 3 hour periods that make up approximately 7 hours per week.
We can provide an evaluation for your educational institution should you wish to include this in a course accreditation.
You may be the best and most brilliant student, have all the wonderful intellectual and practical skills to understand scientific principles or the wonders of digital marketing, but it is all meaningless to an organisation if you are not organised.
One of the key areas that is of value to a business is ‘self organisation’ and to understand the work flow process of corporations which is like its life blood.
This includes the most basic things like running a calendar, using email as a key information flow, following a work flow schedule, understanding urgency of specific events, following a time line, understanding milestones and showing email courtesy which is to simply respond and not leave people in the dark.
I often need to teach this to undergrads and even post grads and interns in general, as I believe it is these skills as a foundation that are the ones that carry you through life. The higher skills and all the other wonderful knowledge areas are meaningless in the business context without these. It is like having a car without a transmission system.
This post is written for existing and potential interns as our internship programme is up and running and we just ran our first course based internship which included an evaluation process as the host organisation with Macleay College see our blog article (below).

The Gumtree Dilemma
I was amazed when I posted a Gumtree advert in February ( pre-Covid) for a student to help hand out post cards leaflets at Orientation Week UYSD and UTS. I receive 70 or so applicants who had auto responses that provided email details, auto cv’s and other information. It was like a social media marketing guy’s dream. However what was missing was actual contact by the many respondees.
When I sent them a follow on response, only 10 students responded and amongst them only three actually filled out the questionnaire and undertook the associated assessment.
The successful student actually just followed the path and filled out the forms and turned up at the zoom interview.
I know that the mainstream recruitment process dulls the senses with its meaningless auto responses and with intermediary assessors who often have no idea what the role is about, and then provide no response. This has created the auto gumtree world methinks.

Our internship programme is up and running and our first ‘course aligned internship’ has been in process over the past few months with an undergrad intern from Macleay College, Sydney, Bachelor of Digital Media.
Aash Thapa, an energetic international student from Nepal showed initiative in obtaining the internship role against many others, simply because firstly he filled out the ‘Internship Questionnaire‘ and took our ‘How agile are you quizz‘. He then showed his energy and enthusiasm in the zoom interview which continued throughout the internship and the early covid period.
Aash then helped with us maintaining a social media presence across the various platforms including personal and business posts on Linked In and Facebook. Though this is an area familiar to us , the process needs continuous posting based on a strategy.
Thanks to the Macleay College academic team also who supervised Aash and I was also able to provide an evaluation of the internships as part of the assessment process.

This is a 3 month programme and with a target of 85 hours online and you can work on the internship from home in 2 to 3 hour periods that make up approximately 7 hours per week.

We are establishing a work experience and internship programme to help students who are seeking job experience as part of their university accreditation to obtain their degree.
Who is it for?
The programme is primarily for undergraduate and post graduate students in their second or third year who are required to log a specific number of hours to count toward their degree.
It is also for undergrad and postgrad students seeking work experience and internships as part of their university course selections e.g. internship subjects that are electives.
How does it work?
There are three streams in a stepping stone pathway ( you enter at step 1 and progress to step 3):
Work Placement : Unpaid approximately 85 hours ( 1 day per week for 12 weeks approximately. We prefer that students do not work for long periods of time in an unpaid capacity and this is a stepping stone into the internship programme. There is a ‘getting to know each other’ period of 20 hours and will run for a period of 3 to 4 weeks before the longer 85 hours is confirmed. Your activities are logged and a certificate provided with a reference.
Gig Internship: Paid target target maximum 40 hours: This is a paid or unpaid role at a nominal amount of $20 per hour and involves simple support tasks that might be for a short period (gig) e.g. administration tasks, handing out leaflets. Tasks are logged and may be intermittent and not continuous. Your activities are logged and a certificate provided with a reference at the completion of your gig period.
Project Intern paid: Paid target approximately 85 hours: This is a paid role which is based on skill sets that bring revenue or client engagement and are justified on a business case. Nominal amount $35 per hour. Tasks are logged and may be intermittent and not continuous. Your activities are logged and a certificate provided with a reference upon completion.
Student Internship- as part of your university course
Many universities provide an elective subject that involves a full term (quarter, trimester or semester) internship programme which is in the form of a course unit. You elect to do the internship course as part of your university course and then your are provided with a placement with an industry business/sponsor who has established a project with clear outcomes that are assessed both by an academic supervisor and the sponsor’s supervisor. There are usually assessment based reports and activities.
Student Internship Unpaid: Unpaid target 10 to 12 weeks , 1 to 2 days per week. This internship is provided in conjunction with a university provider where the placement is with our organisation and the internship substitutes an elective or capstone course unit in the University internship offering. Tasks are logged and are continuous for the trimester, semester or quarter. We provide job supervision and certification and the university provides academic supervision. The internship counts as a completed course unit in your university degree.
Pre-requisites for appointment as an intern or work experience student:
You should preferably be in second or third year and in a course that requires you to undertake a number of industry engagement hours in a related work situation.
You are required to enrol in our Intern Starter Induction Course which provides an understanding of the overall course and mentor structure of the Faster Class and Master Class offerings that we provide. This is to both induct you but also confirm your commitment to the process. The induction process for us takes time with new interns.
You need to start as a step 1 work placement student which is unpaid for a maximum of 20 hours and involves an assessment/review period.

Is the work continuous and guaranteed?
For type 1,2 and 3 as noted for each type of internship work is intermittent and logged.
When am I paid?
For type 2 and 3 you are paid after each task is completed and usually on average after 8 hours or by agreement
What is my employment status?
We comply with Fair Work Ombudsmen’s guidelines for unpaid internships which we classify as ‘vocational placements’.

For any casual and part time employment and paid work you are typically considered a contractor or casual employee depending on the task and situation and we use the Australian Tax Office guidelines for this arrangement which is separate from the Vocational Placement noted above.

We need an enthusiastic university or college student to help hand out post card marketing materials near key universities in Sydney during key college events like orientation, census and career week. There are other opportunities that might arise as time goes by and based on your enthusiasm and approach which includes work experience and internship.
You should have the following preferred Profile:
-Marketing, business, finance or property student
-A digital marketing awareness ( not an expert)
-Studying at a major Sydney University or college
-Living near to Ultimo, Marsfield or Parramatta or an easy trip by train.
-Available mid mornings for approximately 2 hours at a time to hand out post cards
-Will work in pairs for security.
– Communicate well and show enthusiasm.
-You should be enthusiastic and be able to promote the course when handing out to students and love interacting with people.
